Broncos concerned by speedy Colts’ defense

It might be Peyton Manning who gets most the attention when it comes to the undefeated Indianapolis Colts, but Broncos coaches and players said Wednesday that the Colts’ defense is just as dangerous.

The Broncos (8-4) play at Indianapolis (12-0) on Sunday.

“They play faster than every team in the league,” Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said of Indianapolis’ defense. “Everybody on this defense is fast, the front is fast, they play fast, they stunt fast, they blitz fast, they cover fast. Everything they do is about speed.”

The Colts are ranked second in the NFL in points allowed, at an average of 16.8, and defensive ends Dwight Freeney (10.5) and Robert Mathis (9.5) have combined for 20 sacks.

Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton said the offense knows it will be crucial to find a way to maintain drives against the Colts in order to help the Broncos defense slow down Manning and the Colts’ top-ranked passing game.
