DENVER, Colorado ” The Broncos released their first depth chart of camp. The closest thing to surprises listed on the chart are Nate Webster starting at middle linebacker ahead of free agent signee Niko Koutouvides, and Marcus Thomas starting a defensive tackle ahead of Kenny Peterson.

Selvin Young is the No. 1 running back, ahead of Andre Hall. Chris Kuper is listed as the starter at right guard. Last year’s starter, Montrae Holland, still has not practiced as he is working on the side to meet a weight requirement set by the team. Rookie Eddie Royal is listed as the No. 1 punt and kickoff return specialist.

More noticeable is Royal’s status as the No. 2 receiver behind Marshall. “You have to put a depth chart out before the first exhibition game,” Shanahan said. “I think we all know there are a number of positions that are very close, but you have to put someone down at first team and second team ” even though you really don’t know. It’s that close.”
