Buffs a bust in both run and pass blocking
The Denver Post
BOULDER – As bad as Colorado’s blocking appeared Sunday night against Colorado State, apparently a video review of the game looked worse to the coaches.
“We were bitterly disappointed in our performance,” CU offensive line coach Denver Johnson said. “We certainly didn’t have the night we wanted in the run game, and we had some pass-protection problems as well.”
Three offensive linemen – guard Ethan Adkins, tackle Bryce Givens and center Mike Iltis – made their first career starts. And sophomore Ryan Miller started at guard for the first time. Perhaps they were too pumped up and lost concentration, Johnson said.
“I thought the crowd was electric, and I’m not sure we handled that very well,” the coach said.
Miller said execution, or lack thereof, was the problem. “We have to do what we know we can,” he said. “We really ended up beating ourselves.”
The good thing, Johnson said, is that his unit “has taken ownership” of the poor performance. “I think they will play better (tonight at Toledo).”
