Club a bargain at $50
Mary Ellen Cope of Edwards picked up a 3-wood for 50 bucks last fall because she didn’t have any woods in her bag.
On Tuesday she cashed in big time by acing the par-3, 153-yard eighth hole at Eagle Ranch.
“It’s true. I bought it at a thrift store,” Cope laughed. “We laugh about the club alot. It’s my Unibody club.”
Whatever you call it, Cope pulled it out of her bag on the eighth playing into a stiff head wind.
“I didn’t see it go in,” Cope said. “I sort of lost it and thought it rolled off the back.”
Barb Feldman of Singletree, playing with Cope, Kathy Fisher of Eagle-Vail and Julie Hansen of Vail, did see it all the way.
“She drove it onto the green and it only had to roll a little bit,” Feldman said. “I said, “I think it went in,’ and we all started screaming.”
The postround celebration was was mellow as the foursome had lunch at the clubhouse.
“We all went into the clubhouse. I had some iced tea. You couldn’t do too much because you have to come home and cook dinner. My husband Stan did buy a bottle of Champagne, though,” Cope said.
Cope has flirted with a hole-in-one before. Four years ago, she sliced a ball way out of bounds at the par-3, fifth hole at the-then Singletree course in Edwards. On her next shot, she promptly holed out for what she called “a pretty good par.”
