Club spikers shine in Nebraska tournament
Vail, CO Colorado
OMAHA, Neb. ” Traveling 10 hours by bus to a national tournament with more than 300 teams paid off for the Front Range Mountain Volleyball Club-Mountain Division 17-Crimson and 15-Navy teams last weekend in Omaha, Neb.
Competing against some of the best USAV club volleyball teams from all over the Midwest helped the young 17-under Mountain Division squad regain its confidence and prepared the Mountain Division 15s for their debut in RMR-USAV Division I play next weekend.
Playing in the annual TVA President’s Day tourney, a prelude to the USAV Junior Olympic National Qualifier season, the Mountain Division 17-Crimson rebounded well after struggling two weeks ago in Rocky Mountain Region-USAV Division I play in its age group.
Strong performances by Battle Mountain’s Anna Padgett-Shields and Kelsey Plath, as well as solid leadership from Eagle Valley ‘s Whitney Van Voorst, helped the young 17-under team finish 17th overall out of 48 teams in their division.
“They learned how to handle the pressures of national competition by bringing a more consistent level of performance against teams with more experience” said head coach Aaron Shepardson. “They were much tougher under pressure this past weekend.”
Even though the Mountain Division 15s struggled early in the tournament, the young squad extended all of its matches to three sets but just couldn’t find the way to victory in the short 15 point tie-breaker sets.
However behind the play of Eagle Valley Middle School’s Alex Lassa and Eagle Valley’s Shelby Wright, the 15s followed up on the third day of competition by going undefeated in two-straight matches.
