Coal Ridge stuns VMS soccer in overtime, 2-1

NEW CASTLE — Things just got interesting in the 3A Western Slope soccer chase, but then again did you expect otherwise?

Coal Ridge knocked off the Vail Mountain School, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday in New Castle and that blows the league race wide open.

For Vail Mountain, its game against the Titans falls under the category of “stuff happens.” The Gore Rangers (7-2 overall and 3-1 in the Slope) got off to an early lead with a Peter Ferraro goal from Theo Marston.

VMS had plenty of chances to increase that lead with five breakaways and two crossbars, but couldn’t capitalize.

“They were definitely disappointed,” VMS coach Pete Petrovski said. “When things got tight, we collapsed a little bit in areas. But we played well. It wasn’t like they took it to us, and we couldn’t compete. Our boys played well. We just needed to finish.”

Five League Games Left

And this is where Vail Mountain School math teacher Oliver Compton needs to come out of retirement to help everyone. The Slope now has a four-way tie, and everyone has one loss — Delta (5-1), Coal Ridge (4-1), Basalt (4-1) and VMS (3-1).

For the record, Coal Ridge’s loss is Delta. Delta lost to Basalt. Coal Ridge beat Basalt and VMS has its loss to Coal Ridge. (You will be quizzed on this later.)

VMS has five league games left, including Delta coming to East Vail on Friday and an Oct. 18 date at Basalt. And the easiest scenario for VMS fans is to root for those same Longhorns on Tuesday when they head to Coal Ridge.

In the meantime, the Gore Rangers will regroup and prepare for four games next week all at home — Moffat County on Tuesday, Colorado Rocky Mountain School on Thursday, Delta on Friday and Jefferson Academy on Saturday.
