Colorado Avalanche fire head coach Tony Granato

DENVER, Colorado ” The Colorado Avalanche have fired head coach Tony Granato and five other coaches and assistants.

Granato was dismissed Wednesday.

It was the second major offseason move made by the team after their worst finish since moving to Denver in 1995. Colorado fired general manager Francois Giguere in April.

The team is expected to announce a new management structure later Wednesday.

The Avs courted Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy to be their coach, but he turned them down.

Also fired Wednesday were assistant coaches Jacques Cloutier and Dave Barr, goaltending coach Jeff Hackett, assistant to the general manager Michel Goulet and video coordinator PJ DeLuca.

The Avalanche finished last in the Western Conference.
