Colorado Avalanche rookie Cale Makar to play in second NHL game tonight against Calgary Flames
Rookie defenseman Cale Makar will replace the injured Sam Girard as the Avalanche enters Game 4 of its first-round playoff series against Calgary Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center.
Makar, 20, made his NHL debut in Monday’s Game 3, just two days after playing in the NCAA championship game in Buffalo. Makar logged nearly 15 minutes of ice time and scored a goal on his first career NHL shot in a 6-2 rout.
Makar spent Tuesday settling into his Denver-area hotel and decompressing from what he termed a “crazy” 72 hours since UMass lost to Minnesota-Duluth in the national championship game. He had dinner with his parents Tuesday evening after spending much of the day returning phone calls and texts from people from Calgary — his hometown — and college friends in Massachusetts.
“There’s nothing I’m too stressed about now. I’m relatively comfortable,” Makar said after the Avs’ morning skate. “It’s just going to be a thing where every day you got to get more comfortable, and it’s been awesome being with these guys. They’ve helped me out a lot.”
