Devils advance to regionals
The Devils needed a fist-round win at Hotchkiss Tuesday to solidify the berth, but had fallen to the Bulldogs twice this season by a combined seven points. Down by two with four seconds to go Tuesday, Eagle Valley scored to send the game into overtime, where the Devils went on to a 70-65 victory.
Senior Craig Jagger led all scorers with 30 points.
“In the fourth, he was our go-to guy,” Devils head coach Phil Cain said. “The win feels good, especially in district tournament time. To go to the semifinals as the five seed and on the road, is nice.”
Eagle Valley will travel to Palisade Friday to defend its district championship and take on the winner of the Cedaredge/Gunnison matchup. Cedaredge won the 3A Western Slope League championship with a perfect 14-0 record. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. Five teams from the league qualified for regionals, starting March 7.
Tuesday, Eagle Valley trailed 32-27 before closing the gap and taking a slim lead in the fourth quarter. The game see-sawed until its conclusion, with a happy Devils’ crew smiling.
Justin Wood added 13 points, Dillon Barkman scored 12 and Jerad Schlegel pitched in 10.
The win was the Devils’ fourth in a row, while the Bulldogs lost for the first time in five tries.
