Devils basketball picks up wins

The Martins are a busy bunch.

Kylie Martin scored 28 points for the second time this season as Eagle Valley girls basketball knocked off Central, 53-46, to finish the Mitchell tournament with 2-1 record.

Meanwhile, Garrett Martin and the Devils boys basketball team picked up two more wins on Saturday — 91-30 over Lake County and 87-50 against Crested Butte — to start the season 3-0.

The girls bounced back from their first loss of the season on Friday behind big effort from Kylie Martin as well as 18 points from Regan Bossow.

Garrett Martin had eight points and eight rebounds against Lake County and added another 14 points against Crested Butte.

It’s worth noting in each of Eagle Valley boys basketball’s three games this weekend, it was different players stepping up. Against Moffat County, Jesus Loera had 16 points and six blocks. Against Lake County, Arturo Loera dropped 20 points, while Matthew Sanchez had 15.

And come Crested Butte, it was Jimmy Murphy with 24 points and Dawson Keller ringing up eight points and 12 boards. Nine of the latter came on the offensive end.

Said balance bodes well for the Devils, who host Vail Christian on Tuesday at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Saints girls win

EDWARDS — Vail Christian girls basketball had a nice bounce-back victory on Saturday at its home tournament, thrashing Telluride, 51-26.

That’s what the doctor ordered after a season-opening loss to Battle Mountain on Friday.

“We just played smarter,” Saints coach Beth Raitt said. “We settled down. I think the girls saw the difference with a good flow.”

As Claude Raines would say, “Round up the usual suspects.” Marti Schmidt led the Saints with 18 points, followed by Jesse Raitt with 12 and Kass Baker six. Also give it up for Maddy Friel, who was big on the boards.

Vail Christian boys basketball was much more competitive in its second game on the season on Saturday, falling to the Miners, 65-52. (Yes, it was Telluride Day for the Saints at the Vail Christian Tip-Off Tournament.)

Please do not panic with an 0-2 start for the gents.

“We’re still finding out way,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “We’re figuring out some things we do well and those things we can improve.”

Sebastian Moritz paced the Saints with 20 points, while Bryan Trujillo had 15. E.J. Koller finished with eight.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for both sets of Saints as they head to Gypsum to face Eagle Valley on Tuesday at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Huskies win tourney titles

EDWARDS — Both Battle Mountain teams won the Vail Christian Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday in Edwards.

The ladies beat Lake County, 49-19, while the gents took care of Longmont Christian, 68-49.

As always, ladies first, so we go to Huskies girls basketball coach Paul Stevens.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “We have lots of rust we have to work on. We have to get familiar with where everyone should be. We’re getting better defensively. We just have to get some more continuity.”

Stephany Hernandez led the way with 12 points, while Dylan Barker logged 11 and Sara Sullivan had 10.

For the guys, a 2-0 start is also welcome news. Devin Huffman, Miles Joersz and Baker Gentry were all in double digits. That said, no team is finished work of art after the first weekend.

“What we learned was what we need to work on,” Huskies boys coach Phil Tronsrue said. “We had some defensive issues and we need to work on our free-throw shooting.”

The Huskies boys head to Green Mountain on Thursday for a tournament, starting with Central. The ladies are off until Dec. 16, when they are at a tournament in Delta.
