Devils beat Demons; wait on seed

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Eagle Valley volleyball did its part. Now let’s see what the computer says.

The Devils swept Glenwood Springs, 25-16, 25-16, 25-13, on Thursday night to finish the year at 16-7 overall and 11-3 in the 4A Slope.

Eagle Valley is currently No. 17 in the maxpreps.com rankings, which will be reissued for the regional draw on Sunday. Ironically, if nothing changes between now and then, the Devils would go to Delta for the postseason. First, the odds of nothing changing are remote. Second, that really defeats the point of the waterfall format in regionals. The whole point would be to play teams outside one’s league.

The bigger question is whether the Devils can jump five spots to No. 12 and host a regional next weekend. Only the computer knows.

So, the above was written on Thursday night. Devils coach Lindsey Myers was quite positive that there would be a shakeup in the rankings. While no one knows with certainty if the Devils can jump to No. 12 or better, the coach knows her Slope volleyball. Palisade upset Delta in three, 25-23, 25-22, 25-16. That will certainly drop Delta as the computer crunches that result. It also leaves the possibility that the league could have as many as six teams in the postseason. In addition to Steamboat, Eagle Valley, Delta and Battle Mountain, both Palisade and Summit County are within the top 36.

Stay tuned.
