GYPSUM – Friday proved to be a sentimental evening for the seniors on the Eagle Valley wrestling team, as well as a night of tough competition. The Devils faced two formidable wrestling programs in their final home event of the season, falling to Moffat County, 51-25, as well as 5A Grand Junction Central, 48-30.”We didn’t perform very well as a team tonight but they worked hard and I’m proud of them,” says Ron Beard, EVHS wrestling coach.

In the first dual, The Devils (ranked no. 6 in 4A) had great performances out of several wrestlers against No. 7 Moffat County and powerhouse No. 5 Grand Junction Central. With regional tournament only a week away, seniors Mason Ewing (135 pounds), Kylan Kottenstette (152 pounds), and junior Brendan Best (171 pounds) were at the top of their game going undefeated for the evening. Best and Ewing easily handled their opponents’ earning two victories by pinfall each. Kottenstette was solid with two wins by decision.

“Going into state we’re strong. Overall Moffat may be tougher as a team, but we have four guys (Chris Harvey, Kottenstette, Ewing and Best) that can get the job done,” said Best.Harvey (160 pounds), one of the top ranked wrestlers in the state lost a tough match to Grand Junction Central’s Logan Hancock, 3-2.In one of the most exciting matches of the evening, Devils’ sophomore Herman Hogue lost to Grand Junction Central’s Alex Lybarger, 8-6.
