Devils get first 4A Slope victory

EAGLE – The Eagle Valley Devils got a go-ahead goal in the 60th minute of action from Wes Minett to break a 1-1 tie and then got another one in the 70th minute from Matt Barker to push past Palisade Tuesday for their first win in the 4A Western Slope.”It feels good,” coach Brian Large said. “It feels like a load has been lifted, more or less. It gives us a little more reason to go out there and win some more.”The Bulldogs were the first on the scoreboard in the first half Tuesday, but Jordan Meikle quickly tied things up in the 25th minute on a direct kick from about 25 yards out. The kick came after Mauricio Lagos was fouled by a Palisade player. Meikle took the ball from the right side of the field and blasted a shot that made its way into the net. Eagle Valley’s tie-breaking score then came from Minett off a nice pass from Kyle Simonett halfway through the second 40 minutes of play. Simonett ran down a lofting ball for a breakaway and then slotted a touch pass to Minett who put the ball in the net. The final goal came off another smooth assist when Brian McDonough found Barker in a one-on-one situation with another Palisade player. McDonough fed Barker the ball and then the sophomore was able to do the rest, beating the opposing team’s goalie for the score.Devils goalie Ross Herr was also crucial in the win, finishing with nine saves from 10 shots on goal. Large also said a steady rotation of hungry players was the reason that the Devils were able to get their first win of the season.”I thought that since we had depth on the bench we should use it,” Large said. “We were continually keeping fresh legs out on the field, especially through the midfield. We were able to have a little better stamina out there. “I’ve been trying to let people play so I can rely on other people that have stepped up, and Cody Birk came in and played a great game at right back today. He doesn’t have tons of skill at soccer, but he’s a smart guy and he come out and did what I told him to do.”With the win Eagle Valley improved to 1-3 in the 4A Slope and 1-4 overallEagle Valley next plays at Rifle Thursday at 4 p.m.Contact Nate Peterson at (970) 949-0555, ext. 608, or via e-mail at npeterson@vaildaily.comVail Colorado
