Devils’ girls shine in freestyle finale
The state meet can’t come fast enough for the Eagle Valley girls’ team. The Devils had five skiers in the top 21, the state-cut line. With Jill Ewing in seventh, Kim Smith in ninth and Katie Wick 11th, the Devils amassed 158 points to finish second behind Summit, which had 173 points. Audrey Powell (13th) and Ellie Comerford (20th) also put up state times for Glen Ewing’s crew.
For the Vail Mountain School, Haleigh Armstrong continued her great season finishing second in 20 minutes, 2 seconds. Teammate Courtney Robinson kept the heat on in the Skimeister race with a 19th-place finish. Jenny Thorne was the Gore Rangers’ third scorer.
From Huskies’ Nation, Maddie McCaulley led the way, in 10th, followed by Meghan Meehan in 14th. Courtney Davis and Lauren Vickers were 27th and 29th, respectively.
In the boys’ race, VMS won Eagle County bragging rights, finishing fourth. Sylvan Ellefson led the Gore Rangers’ charge. Josh Smith clocked in at 16th, followed by Duncan Robinson (23rd), Taylor Sheldon (24th), A.J. LeGaye (27th) and Brad Bingham (29th). The state-cut line was 30th.
Battle Mountain’s Grant Stevenson nearly knocked off Ellefson, finishing eighth. But it was still a great day for the sophomore who notched his first top 10 and a personal-record time of 17:17.
Battle Mountain’s other scorers were Corey Wilson (39th) and Jason Edeen (56th).
For Eagle Valley, Dan Lewis led the Devils in 22nd. Everet Minett was 31st, while James Ewing was 32nd.
The Nordic circuit goes to Carbondale a week from today for a classic. Meanwhile, alpine was at Ski Cooper for the final race of the regular season Friday. Results were not available as off press time.
