Devils grapples start season with win
The Devils, using five pins and four forfeits, rolled with the help of senior leadership, and a pair of freshman who landed pins in less than a minute.
“I thought the kids wrestled with a lot of heart,” Devils first-year head coach Jeff Lueders said. “They have worked hard so far this year and I expect them to have an outstanding season. We are not totally satisfied with our effort. We could have worked a little harder in some matches.”
With Tommy Barela (103 pounds), B.J. Jaramillo (112) and Mason Ewing (119) starting off with forfeits, junior B.J. Ewing added to the lead with a first-round pin. Freshmen Kylan Kottenstette and Chris Harvey pinned their opponents in the quickest matches of the day, 51 and 54 seconds, respectively.
“From the summer, when I watched them, I was excited to see what they could do,” Lueders said.
Junior Tim Rietz (145) and senior John Saldana (275) also pinned their opponents.
Greg Hollis (152), Philip Rivera (160), Charles Faulhaber (171) and Brian Saldana (189) won decisions Thursday. Senior Jeff Bair won the 215-pound match by forfeit.
“It was a good start to he season, and hopefully we will wrestle a little better at the Steamboat Invitational on Saturday,” Lueders said.
The Devils will hit the mat at 9 a.m.
Eagle Valley’s first home match is Friday, when the Devils host Rifle at 7 p.m.
