FRUITA — Eagle Valley cross country must like going to parties where they play that game, “How low can you go?”

Both Gino Giovagnoli and Nathan Maddox popped off runs in the 16-minute range on Saturday at the Ana Banana invitational in Fruita. Giovagnoli finished seventh in 16 minutes, 39 seconds. Nathan Maddox came home in 16:51.

Just in case you’re wondering, Mario Gonzalez holds the school record at 16:21.

“We were definitely looking to drop some time, and show off all the hard work we’ve done,” Devils coach Melinda Brandt said. “We did exactly that. Gino recorded the fastest time we’ve ever had on that course.”

The boys’ team ended up in a photo finish in third place with 85 points just behind Grand Junction (83) and Fruita (84).

That girls are going low in a different way — youth. Eagle Valley’s top-three finishers Saturday were all fresh-people — Shawna Adams, Desy Mendoza and Michaela Mitchell.

“The week was a huge confidence builder for our three freshmen,” Brandt said. “Shawna has never been our No. 1 runner. Each week the girls are gaining more confidence and getting better.”

The Hoss Awards went to James Robinson and Kaeli Niemeyer,

Eagle Valley’s final regional tune-up is at Aspen next week for the Chris Severy Invite.
