Devils land three on all-league soccer team
Senior Derek Fawcett, the Devils’ center midfielder, was named to the 3A Western Slope all-league team, along with fellow-midfielder and senior Matt Hogoboom. Tommy Michelbrink earned honorable mention honors.
Highlights for Fawcett include his first goal as a member of the varsity and the game-winner in overtime against Colorado Rocky Mountain School late in the season. The Devils qualified for regional action, partly due to the come-from-behind win against CRMS.
“He’s had an outstanding season,” head coach Brian Large said. “He’s made so many nice passes up the sideline, excelled on corner kicks and put up some great free kicks.”
Hogoboom’s could find the net from any distance, Large said.
“Matt and Derek have played a lot together in club and compliment each other in a lot of ways,” Large said. “He’s got a great shot between 25 and 30 yards when he has a chance to unload.”
Michelbrink, meanwhile, filled in as sweeper this season.
“We needed somebody to step up and play sweeper and Tommy did that,” Large said. “We were able to stay in a lot of games, mostly because he can anticipate what’s going to happen.”
Eagle Valley finished fourth in the Western Slope this season, a big improvement from the previous season, when the Devils failed to qualify for regionals.
