Devils lax survives cold, sweeps in Gypsum

The latest snow is causing havoc with the high school sports schedule.
Today’s Battle Mountain at Eagle Valley baseball doubleheader got scrubbed on Friday. No makeup date has been announced.
VMS lacrosse did not play at Steamboat Springs. The Gore Rangers are at Steamboat on Monday.
Vail Christian at Vail Mountain soccer, set for today is also snowed out.
GYPSUM — On a cold, raw day, what better way to stay warm than by yelling a lot and scoring a bunch of goals?
That seemed to work for Eagle Valley girls lacrosse as the Devils took care of Steamboat Springs, 19-11, at John Ramunno Field in Gypsum.
“It was freezing,” Eagle Valley’s Karsang Sherpa. “I was thinking I was going to get frostbite. It’s more about our team and wanting to win.”
That’s a valid point by Eagle Valley’s co-captain, but the procession into the school’s cafeteria after the buzzer went off was justifiably rapid.
The Devils (2-2) specifically set out some offensive goals in the first and second halves.

“At the beginning of each half we set a goal goal,” Devils coach Stephanie Renzelman said. “The first half, we set 10 and met it. The second half, we wanted 10. We didn’t get it, but we’ll take it.”
Haley Carpenter went crazy in good way with six goals, while Lindsay Martinez had four. Judy Torres, Becy Glutova, Teaghan Mercer and Jilian Byron each had two, while Megan Aalto also repped the twine.
Meanwhile, the defense yelled a lot. More specifically that would be Sherpa, Cassandra Gonzalez and goalie Erin Keeney. But there is a method.
“We’re intimidating the players so they drop the ball or make a bad pass,” Gonzalez said. “We’re also yelling crash, so that all the players go to help at the goal.”
And that worked nicely as the Devils held the visiting Sailors to just four goals in the first half.
With the win, Eagle Valley’s won two in a row, and that gives the team some momentum going into Tuesday game against Summit County.
“I think it’s going to be awesome going into Summit,” Renzelman said. “Hopefully, we can win that. We’ll practice on Monday. Hopefully they’re thawed out by then.”
Boys topple Tigers
GYPSUM — If the Eagle Valley lacrosse team needed an illustration that Summit County can be had, well, the Devils boys showed that it can be done, beating the Tigers, 9-5, on Friday afternoon up at the Gypsum Sports Complex.
And, yes, it was just as cold up there as it was down at Ramunno Field.
“It wasn’t as cold as it would be if we lost,” Devils coach Boomer Devlin said.
Jared Salaz led the way with four goals, while Keaton Fedrizzi had two. Koby Beaumont, Chris Stuart-Diiley and Jesse Relefors also scored as the Devils evened their record at 2-2.
More import than the goals, according to Devlin, was the way Zach Booth and Salaz distributed the ball. They were solid in controlling the tempo of the game, moving the ball quickly on the attack, yet slowing it down at appropriate moments.
Spencer Burwell also was big in net. He had 15 saves, and several of those were big in the early going to keep the Devils in the game.
Eagle Valley is off until April 2 when it heads to Telluride.
