Devils lose to Moffat, 60-6

Nate Peterson

CRAIG -Things got off to a bad start Friday night for the Eagle Valley Devils at Moffat County. The Devils fumbled the opening kickoff to give the Bulldogs prime starting field position for an easy first touchdown and then continued to fumble opportunities away all night, giving up a total of eight turnovers in a 60-6 loss.”We didn’t have a very good night up here tonight,” coach John Ramunno said. “The same thing really killed us again with the turnovers. Moffat had a lot of short fields with us.”The lone Eagle Valley score came in the second quarter when sophomore quarterback Mike Medsker hooked up with senior wideout Brad Gamble for a 17-yard touchdown strike. Ramunno’s team also had another good opportunity of getting in the end zone on its opening drive of the second quarter, driving all the way down to Moffat County’s 1-yard line, but ultimately came away with no points. “We had a couple other chances at scoring.” Ramunno said. “We just couldn’t put it in.”The Devils defense did have an impressive showing in the second quarter and third quarter, holding Moffat County to a single touchdown in each period, but eventually the turnovers began to take their toll on a unit that was out on the field most of the night. The Bulldogs rolled to 20 points in the final 12 minutes.Of the eight turnovers, five came on the ground and the other three came via the airways as Medsker accounted for two picks and sophomore quarterback Alex Dorothy accounted for the other. The loss dropped Eagle Valley to 0-3 overall, and 0-2 in 3A Slope play. The Devils kick off again at 7 p.m. next Friday against Cortez at Hot Stuff Stadium.Staff Writer Nate Peterson can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 608, or npeterson@vaildaily.com.
