Devils run well at Dakota Ridge

LITTLETON, Colorado ” The Eagle Valley cross country team brought home some hardware on Tuesday from the Dakota Ridge Invitational in Littleton. The boys team finished second in Division II, and the girls took third.

Mario Gonzalez-Martinez and Joe Trujillo are forming quite a duo for Eagle Valley. Gonzalez-Martinez followed his win at the Demon Invitational on Saturday with another solid performance. The junior paced the Devils with a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds and a second-place finish. Trujillo was right behind Gonzalez-Martinez in third place.

“This is the third solid race in a row for Joe,” Eagle Valley coach Melinda Brandt said. “He really pushed hard to stay right behind Mario. He had a great final push where he passed some guys. He ran really strong.”

Uvaldo Trujillo also finished with solid time of 19:39 for the Devils to take 11th place.

“We really count on Mario, Joe and Uvaldo to be solid each week,” Brandt said. “We rely on those guys and each week they’ve come through for us.”

Riley Simonton (20:50), Cody Frye (21:04) and Prather Silverthorn (21:05) also ran well for Eagle Valley.

The Eagle Valley girls put together a strong team effort to take third place overall. Kelly Cassidy paced the Devils with a time of 23:21 for seventh place. Shelby Massie (23:54) and Logan Kinser (23:54.5) pushed each other to a 12th and 13th-place finish, respectively.

“Kelly, Logan and Shelby have been very consistent,” Brandt said. “Shelby has been the surprise of the past two weeks. This is the second race in a row she has stepped up.”

Megan McQueeney placed 18th for Eagle Valley after finishing with a time of 25:09. Shanna Zoch (25:41), Hannah Hibbs (26:17) and Ann Carlin (26:35) rounded out the Devils’ finishers.
