Devils sending eight to state

It looks more like a basketball team’s lineup on paper, but it’s Eagle Valley wrestling team that has eight guys who qualified to compete in the 3A Colorado State Wrestling tournament this weekend.

The Devils proved their dominance at the 3A Western Slope regional tournament in Montrose.

Tim Reitz, B.J. Jaramillo, Mason Ewing, Chris Harvey, Chris Best, B.J. Ewing, Brendan Best and Brian Faldana all placed fourth or better in Montrose to earn a spot in the 3A State meet.

“I think our kids wrestled pretty good,” said Eagle Valley wrestling coach Jeff Lueders. “We lost a couple close ones in the finals. But, this is not the tournament we want to win. This week is state, and that’s what we’re shooting for.”

Eagle Valley took third at regionals, with five wrestlers reaching the finals. Olathe won the tournament with 205 points, Hotchkiss took second with 204 points and the Devils tallied 178 points.

Reitz won the 145-pound, weight division, and Jaramillo championed the 103-pound division.

Mason Ewing placed second, losing in overtime in the finals, in the 125-pound division. Harvey took second among the 152-pounders – pinned in the finals – and Faldana was second in the 215-pound division – also pinned in the finals.

Best was third among the 140-pounders, Brendan Best took third at 160 pounds and B.J. Ewing placed fourth at 130 pounds.

The first round of the 3A Colorado State Wrestling tournament starts Thursday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

“I think we can probably do better than we did this last weekend,” said Lueders.”
