Snowouts

Not surprisingly, we lost a few games on Saturday to the snow. Eagle Valley baseball’s doubleheader against Steamboat Springs in Gypsum went by the boards, as did Battle Mountain’s twinbill in Glenwood Springs. Vail Mountain soccer also lost its game at Moffat County. No new dates for those games have been announced.

GRAND JUNCTION — It’s early, but fans have to like what they’re seeing from Eagle Valley track and field.

There are the obvious heroes and the more subtle ones.

“I think some of the newcomers are starting to shine,” Devils coach Jeff Shroll said. “Sophomore Jay Neal had an excellent day today. Senior Davey Madrid is stepping up and doing some great things on the boys’ side in relays and sprints. We’re starting to look where people may be at the end of the season, if they keep training hard.”

Eagle Valley’s girls were third at Saturday’s Mickey Dun Invitational, while the boys were fifth.

Michelle Carbajal won the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 8.25 inches. That a new best this season as she tries to return to state. The girls sprint medley relay of McKenzie Sisson, Megan Asmussen, Carly Volkmer and Roxy Trotter laid down a nice time of 1 minute, 54.86 seconds which won the event. Substitute in Carbajal for Trotter and you have the winning 800 relay team as well.

Trotter was third in the 800 with a time of 2:23, while Dominic Patterson did the same for the boys in 2:02. Taylor Martin was third in the discus.

And this just in, Riley Rolwes is still pretty good. He won the 110 hurdles in 15.9 seconds, the long jump in 20 feet, 3 inches, and the triple jump in 41-8.5. For some reason, the junior finished “only” fourth in the open 200.

GYPSUM

Devils soccer gives Delta the boot

Eagle Valley soccer certainly earned a few days off.

The Devils capped a marathon run of games — nine matches in 16 days — with a very gratifying 3-1 over Delta on Saturday at Hot Stuff Stadium in Gypsum.

“It was great,” Devils coach Stephen Baxter said. “I gave them a few days off next week.”

And rightly so. High school schedules are never works of art, but Devils soccer has already played nine of its 15 regular-season games, far more than any other team in the 4A Slope. The pace doesn’t allow a team much time to make adjustments, especially a side such as Eagle Valley which has a lot of young players and a new coach.

Nonetheless, the Devils moved their record to 3-6, already eclipsing their win total of this past season, and clearly are making strides toward becoming a better team.

Mariel Guttierez struck twice against the Panthers, while Devon Green got her second of the season. Coach Baxter also gave out postgame props to Rose Sandell and Lauren Thorpe for anchoring the defense and midfield, respectively. Jackie Kelly, the freshman netminder, picked up the win in net.

“It’s so amazing right now,” Gutierrez said. “I’m really proud of the way we’re playing. We’ve improved so much in a short time. I really happy we got the win.”

The Devils (2-4 in the Slope) actually have a whole week off without games — a quaint concept — before hosting Battle Mountain on April 1. While Gutierrez joked that “It’s not too bad. We’re teenagers,” she did say the days off would be valuable.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Steamboat nips Devils lax, 10-9

After two tough outings to start the season, Eagle Valley girls lacrosse was in the game for the full 50 minutes in 10-9 loss at Steamboat Springs on Friday.

“I think they loved it and I loved it,” Eagle Valley coach Stephanie Renzelman said. “It was fun to watch. We had talked about it in practice that they were reluctant to go to the goal. They were taking it to the goal every possession. They looked a lot better especially as far as ball movement goes. It was awesome.”

Renzelman, Eagle Valley Class of 2009, should know. She did a fair bit of charging to the net during her career. More importantly, after scoring just two goals in their first two games, the Devils put up nine against the Sailors.

Morgan Trujillo had four goals, while Sarah Cooper scored twice. Kylie O’Neill, Judy Torres and Gabby Jeffers also found the back of the net for Eagle Valley (0-3).

The Devils hope that the momentum will carry forward into Monday’s game at Battle Mountain at 4:30 p.m. in Edwards.
