Devils soccer gets revenge at Glenwood Springs
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Eagle Valley and Glenwood soccer played another 2-1 game on Thursday night.
“Same story, but better,” Devils coach Bratzo Horruitiner joked.
Now, the Devils can laugh off that brutal 2-1 season-opening loss against Glenwood in overtime in Gypsum. Eagle Valley got its payback in Round 2 by the same count.
“It’s great,” said Horruitiner, who is in his fourth year with the program. “We haven’t beaten them in Glenwood since I got here. That was important. We need to win the games we should win. We dealt with adversity and we’re learning as a team.”
Eagle Valley (7-1) started well, putting up a 2-0 first-half lead. Aldo Palacios scored on a free kick. The Devils also showed they could build in phases. Francisco Serna started it up the field to Luis Landeros. He crossed it to Noel Ruiz who had the great header.

The host Demons converted on a penalty kick in the second half, but the Devils were allowing no more Demons miracles. And that’s seven wins in a row after that Glenwood loss for Eagle Valley.
It was pretty apparent as to which opponent the Devils are playing next. Steamboat Springs coach Rob Bohlmann was in the stands. That’s not a coincidence, folks. The Devils head north on Thursday.
“It’s good to see us gaining some interest,” Horruitiner said.
Huskies blank Palisade
PALISADE — OK, Rob Bohlmann wasn’t the only guy in the crowd in Glenwood Springs.
After dispatching Palisade, 8-0, on Thursday on the road, Battle Mountain soccer caught the end of Eagle Valley-Glenwood.
The Huskies (4-2) dropped four-spots in both halves. Sophomore Tony Velasco had his first varsity goal five minutes into the game and added another in the second half. Cody Bahan also broke onto the score sheet with two.
Creek Kamby, Miles Jorsz, Donnie Leavitt and Erik Solis all scored in the laugher.
“It’s great to get a lot of people in the game,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “I always like it when we have six different scorers and two keepers (Alan Vilegas and Jack Skidmore) keep a shutout. And it’s another road trip out of the way.”
Battle Mountain plays seven of its last nine at the friendly confines, starting with Delta today.
Volleyball
Devils spikers sweep Summit
FARMER’S KORNER — Eagle Valley volleyball is 1-0 in a category that counts.
After a tough nonconference schedule against stiff competition, the Devils won their league opener at Summit County, 26-24, 25-21, 25-21.
“It’s what our team needed,” Devils coach Linsdsey Myers said. “Our team can play with the competition we’ll be playing the rest of the way and ultimately decide how postseason goes.”
Eagle Valley was a little surprised by Summit’s size, but countered with speed and excellent serving. It also didn’t hurt that Devon Green dug just about everything off the floor. Becy Glutova and Kylie Martin also got props for their hitting.
Eagle Valley hosts Rifle today.
