Devils softball wins opener
GYPSUM – That’s how you open a season, people.
Eagle Valley softball put its best foot forward in Tuesday’s season opener, smacking Grand Valley, 15-1, in five innings at the Gypsum Sports Complex. The Devils (1-0) scored four in the first inning, one in the second and put up a 10-spot in the fourth to rout the visiting Cardinals.
Cody Osteen, Megan Osteen, Rylee Ellsworth and Kenzie Cooper all showed a good eye at the plate and were opportunistic on the base paths in first inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ally Sands contributed to the onslaught with two hits in the same frame, while Ally Zehring scored twice. Hannah Laisure also knocked in a run.
With plenty of support, Megan Osteen pitched all five innings, fanning nine Grand Valley batters, with Jessica Long doing a nice job of catching.
“The infield really threw the ball well. They played smart, throwing to the right base,” Devils manager Rob Ellsworth said. “We’ve been working on the fundamentals. We played as a team and that’s what I’m most proud of.”
Eagle Valley hosts Montrose Friday at 4 p.m. at the Gypsum Sports Complex.
