Eagle Valley Devils volleyball sweeps Grand Junction Central
GYPSUM — That’s more like it.
Eagle Valley volleyball bounced back from a season-opening loss at Montrose with a 25-16, 25-3, 25-17 thrashing of Grand Junction Central on Tuesday.
The Devils welcomed back Becy Glutova, who was absent from the team on Saturday taking her SATs. As much as the Devils didn’t want to use her absence as an excuse, life without Glutova is kind of like an Oreo cookie without the creamy filling — it just doesn’t work.
Glutova had seven kills, while Emma Lasse had eight.
“We were able to run our offense where we couldn’t before,” coach Jackie Rindy said. “It’s a big deal.”
Eagle Valley has more help on the way as setter Bree Gates should be back for this weekend’s Regis Jam Tournament. In the meantime, Erin Keeney did a fine job there against the Warriors.
Jillian Byron ripped off 16 points serving to start the second set. Elyse Fitzpatrick was also a force at middle blocker, and the evening ended in three.
Eagle Valley (1-1) starts at Regis with Berthoud on Friday.

Huskies beat Saints
EDWARDS — Battle Mountain volleyball won the Battle of Edwards, taking Vail Christian, 25-12, 25-21, 25-14, on Tuesday night.
The Huskies got their first win of the season.
“It was good to bounce back at home and a win for our fans and our psyche,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “We recognize that we have plenty of work to be done if we want to be competitive at the next level.”
Battle Mountain’s Tatum Huffman made her 2017 varsity debut after she had been bothered by a shoulder injury. Middles Eleanor Sheahan and Sylka Snyder were big defensively, while Audrey Wright got a taste at libero.
Battle Mountain hosts Palisade on Saturday at 6 p.m., while the Saints head to North Park on Friday.
