Devils spikers sweep Central
GRAND JUNCTION — OK, it’s now just two matches in, but the early returns continue to be encouraging for Eagle Valley volleyball.
After topping No. 5 Montrose in three last weekend, the Devils took their show on the road and downed Central in a sweep, 25-8, 26-24, 25-16, on Tuesday night.
Eagle Valley is 2-0 to start the season after beating a state regulat and another squad that beat the Devils in three last year.
While a three-set win generally doesn’t have turning points, there was some drama in the second stanza. The host Warriors ran off nine-straight points.
“They didn’t give up on each other,” Devils coach Jackie Rindy said. “They stuck it out and found a way to win a set.”
Yes, Eagle Valley was seemingly in control, having won the first set easily, thanks to lights-out serving from Jillian Byron. But momentum can swing so quickly in volleyball that winning the second, even with some unforced errors, was key. Along with the usual suspects, Rindy said that Shelbi Lubbers and Elyse Fitzpatrick were outstanding at the net.
The Devils are off to the Regis Jam Tournament this weekend. Friday, they face St. Teresa’s Academy of Kansas City, Missouri, and Fruita Monument because it makes complete sense to play the latter in Denver. Eagle Valley plays opponents to be determined on Saturday.
“We expect the level of play to be pretty high,” Rindy said. “It will give us a chance to try some different things.”
