GYPSUM — And that’s how you start a season.

Despite not much outdoor practice and the usual cold temperatures that come with so-called spring sports, Eagle Valley soccer started the 2015 season with a bang, blasting Summit County, 6-1, at Hot Stuff Stadium in Gypsum on Thursday.

“That was an epic way to start the year,” Devils coach Stephen Baxter said. “The gamesmanship, their situational awareness on the field and their communication was awesome.”

The Devils are a young squad with just three upperclass-people on their roster. But coming off a 7-8 season last spring, they seem intent on making some noise.

Offensive Onslaught

One of those upperclass-persons is Mariel Gutierrez, who had four goals. That always helps. Sophomore Camilla Petterson added the other two. First-year Sophia Aguilar had two assists in the offensive onslaught.

Brennecke Gale, a fresh-person, got her first varsity win in net.

Despite this great start to the season, coach Baxter is wisely low-key with regard to season expectations.

“My expectation is to help them grow as players and get them stronger and more united,” he said. “I want them to continue growing as a great group of girls.”

Eagle Valley (1-0) heads to Delta on Saturday.
