Devils track solid in cold Craig

CRAIG – It was windy and cold. It even snowed at times.

In short, it was real track and field weather for these parts, despite the early spring this year.

“Yeah it was normal, especially for Moffat (County),” Eagle Valley track and field coach Jeff Shroll said.

Despite tough conditions, the Devils girls were second at Friday’s Clint Wells Invitational, while the boys were third.

“I’m really proud of the kids’ effort,” Shroll said. “It was unbelievably windy, and the temperature was as cold as it’s been this year. The times weren’t what they could have been, but with the weather, we’re happy.”

This officially kicks off the stretch drive to state for Eagle Valley. The Devils have their next two meets down in “summery” Grand Junction with the Tiger Invitational next weekend and the league meet after that. This is when the times drop and/or the distances increase after what is usually a snowy spring. Despite this year’s warm weather – Friday excluded – Shroll expects the same.

Michelle Carbajal seems safely within the state 18. Shroll said that Roxy Trotter is within striking distance in the 800 meters. Megan Osteen and Justine Bukovich are close in the high jump. Shroll is eager to see what Carly Volkmer can do now that she’s healthy.

On the boys side, Jeremy Sabo (high jump) and Roberto Cortes (throwing) are looking good for state. Hunter Burnham should be in contention is the distance races.

Eagle Valley will send a few relay teams and its pole vaulters to West Grand today.
