GRAND JUNCTION — Got. It. Done.

Eagle Valley girls cross-country went into the Tiger Invitational with the goal of winning the meet on Friday, and the team is adding a trophy to its collection after besting the nine-team field.

The Devils out-paced Gunnison, 33-80, and bunched its five scorers into the top 20.

Joslin Blair and Avery Doan went 1-2, which always helps. Michaela Mitchell, Shelby Essex and Katy Grewe made for a lot of Eagle Valley black and white in the finish area.

“Avery is having an amazing season,” Devils coach Melinda Brandt said. “She had a personal-best (time). She’s trained really hard this summer. Michaela, Shelby and Katy are packing really well, working on running together. It’s the start of a really great season.”

On the boys’ side, Gerardo Lopez appears to be the pleasant surprise of the season. The senior was a soccer player but moved to cross-country this year.

“He’s been a great asset,” Brandt said.

The Devils get some home cooking next week with the Eagle Valley Invitational. The boys start at 10 a.m., with the girls at 10:45 a.m. at the Gypsum Creek Golf Course.
