Dove Valley Days: Smith bolstering Broncos’ secondary

Highlight of the day:

Cornerback Alphonso Smith left college football as the ACC’s all-time leader in interceptions with the kind of coveted “ball skills” scouts consistently look for in defensive backs. Steadily he has put his hands on more and more passes as the Broncos have gone through their workouts. Wednesday he jumped a route in a red zone defense, snagging a Chris Simms pass that got the defense out of a tough spot.

Lowlight of the day:

Just two weeks after opening camp as the back getting the most carries in the starting offense, Ryan Torain was waived by the Broncos. Torain, who strained a left knee ligament and did not practice Tuesday, ended an injury-crossed career with the Broncos having missed

most of his rookie season in ’08 after elbow and knee surgeries. Torain had been briefly compared to Terrell Davis by Mike Shanahan in training camp last August.

Quote of the day:

“I’m excited. I’ve never even been to an NFL game in person.”

– Broncos rookie tight end Richard Quinn on the team’s preseason opener Friday night in San Francisco.
