Eagle cyclocross event wraps up season’s VRD bike races
EAGLE — A cyclocross race will wrap up the Vail Recreation District’s summer bicycling race offerings on Wednesday at the Eagle County Fairgrounds. The race will begin at 5 p.m. and allow local mountain bikers ages 10 and older one last chance to race in the Vail Valley this fall.
Cyclocross is a challenging sport that combines trail riding with many other skills and consists of many laps, approximately 1.5 to 2 miles each, on a course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles. The diverse course often requires the rider to dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstructions and remount — all at the fastest speed possible.
Similar to VRD’s spring short track races, each category will race for 15 to 40 minutes, completing as many laps as possible in that time period.
At Wednesday’s race, youth competitors, ages 10 to 15, will kick things off at 5 p.m. and race for 15 minutes, while the never-ever and beginner racers will take off at 5:20 p.m., followed by sport racers at 5:45 p.m. The pro and open race wraps up the evening at 6:20 p.m.
The beginner and never-ever riders will race for 20 minutes, sport for 30 minutes and the pro and open category for 40 minutes.
Costs are $17 for preregistered adults or $22 on race day and $10 for preregistered youth racers or $15 on race day. Adults who wish to race in a second race may do so for $5. Cyclocross bikes are not required to race.
