Eagle Valley 11-12’s advance to state
The Eagle Valley Devils beat Grand County twice to win the District 3 Major Championship played at the Gypsum Sports Complex last week.
The double-elimination tournament started with a 10-6 win against Idaho Springs. After a disappointing 12-2 loss at the hands of Grand County Eagle Valley sent Jessie Cuno to the mound. Cuno responded with a 12-2 win over Summit County and a return trip to face Grand County on Monday night.
Ryan McClintock was given the pitching duties and pitched an outstanding six innings, while striking out nine and giving the Devils a 5-4 win and sending both teams to a third meeting in the district championship.
With the large home crowd being as noisy as they were the night before. Eagle Valley scored in both the first and second innings. Travis Conway held the Grand County hitters off balance until the third when Grand County touched him for four runs.
In the top of the fourth, Chris Brubeck clubbed a three-run homer which put the Eagle Valley up 7-4. Grand Valley responded with three runs of its own to tie it at seven..
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, with Eagle Valley hurler Cody Coulter, keeping Grand County under wraps.
Brubeck led off the sixth inning with a single, followed by Robert Padgett with another single. A walk and a sacrifice would get Eagle Valley the lead for good.
Eagle Valley went into the bottom of the sixth with an 11-7 lead. Coulter faced four batters in the inning to clinch the win.
The District III Champion team members are: Sean Minett, McClintock, Coulter, Josh Burner, Brubeck, Padgett, Nick Moore, Dwight Bitsuie, Cuno, Kyle Paradis, Nick Pietrack, Travis Conway and Kevin Stough. The team is coached by Stan McClintock, Kevin Brubeck, Dave Pietrack and John Bronn.
The state tournament begins Saturday.
