The Eagle Valley 13-14 Junior All-Stars stunned Steamboat Springs with a come-from-behind win this week to win the the District 3 Junior Championship. With the win, the team advances to the state tournament to be played in Fraser July 19-23.
In the double-elimination tournament this week, also played in Fraser, the All-Stars got off to a good start with a win over Idaho Springs. James Cuno twirled a one-hitter to go with 13 strikeouts in the win, which included good defense from the team.
Eagle Valley then dropped a 12-10 decision to Steamboat, setting up a must-win game with Grand County. Once again, Eagle Valley got strong pitching – this time from Alex Dorothy – which kept the team in the game, when a hitting display by the All-Stars in the fifth inning put the game in the bag for an 8-4 victory.
That set up round two with Steamboat. The game remained close through the first three innings, deadlocked at 2-2. Then, Eagle Valley found its swing with four runs in the fourth. The All-Stars batted around in the sixth for another eight runs. The end result was a 14-3 win for the All-Stars, ended by the 10-run rule.
The District 3 Championship was against a very familiar opponent – Steamboat. Eagle Valley looked sluggish in the first four innings. But, the All-Stars, spurred by substitute bottom-of-the-order hitters coming out with stellar hitting performances in the fifth, Eagle Valley put up a nine-spot, with most of the runs scoring with two outs. Eagle Valley finished the 9-5 win with a rundown of a Steamboat player in the final inning.
The members of the team include Bear Barkman, Hunter Blevins, Cuno, Dorothy, Mitchell Hendrix, Nathan Howe, John Huffman, Chance Long, Kevin Mansfield, Travis Padgett, Holden Ware, Nick Whitehead and Kyle Woods. The team is coached by Rick Huffman, Glenn Padgett and Charlie Cuno.
