Eagle Valley falls to Grand Junction Central in three games
Vail, CO Colorado
GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado ” The Eagle Valley volleyball team couldn’t match 5A Grand Junction Central on Thursday, losing in three games.
The Devils fell behind early in each game and couldn’t make up enough ground. Eagle Valley lost 25-15, 25-16 and 25-14 to drop its first match of the season.
“Give them credit, they served the ball tough,” Eagle Valley coach Shawn Weatherred said. “They are a good program. The game could have been a little more competitive if we could have gotten into our offense more.”
Eagle Valley had trouble tracking down Central’s serves on Thursday. The problems kept the Devils’ offense from getting in rhythm.
“Serve-receive and our lack of serve-receive was the key tonight,” Weatherred said. “We were getting served at and we couldn’t get it back.
“We’ll be working on that quite a bit tomorrow and Monday. We know how to do it.”
Despite its struggles, Eagle Valley made each game competitive. After falling behind, the Devils rallied to within three or four points. Unfortunately for Eagle Valley, it couldn’t capitalize on the momentum before Central pulled away for the win.
“We’d make some good plays, but we couldn’t build on anything we had going positive,” Weatherred said.
Kelsey Foster led the Devils with a combined six points on aces, blocks and kills. Rebecca VonVoorst came off the bench for Eagle Valley and notched three aces.
Eagle Valley (1-1) has a few days to work out the kinks. The Devils don’t play again until Tuesday when they open their home schedule against Grand Junction.
“We’ll come back strong,” Weatherred said,” and be ready to play.”
