Eagle Valley golfers win in Rifle
Eagle, CO Colorado
The Rifle Creek golf course has a split personality.
The older front nine lets you play aggressively. The more back nine, with its dramatic narrow rock formations, requires a more conservative game.
Eagle Valley High School sophomore Nick Bontempo had that game Monday, shooting the low score for the tournament and leading the school’s “black team” to its first victory of the season.
“I won one last year,” Bontempo said. “This one feels good because it was one of our tougher courses to play.”
Bontempo said his drives were in the fairway and his approach shots were strong but he was particularly happy with how he handled the greens.
“The greens were nice and soft,” he said. “The putts rolled well. I made a lot of putts.”
Helping Eagle Valley to victory were Jalen Aquino, who shot an 84, and Austin Fahrenholtz, with an 85.
“The kids kept the ball in play,” coach Tom Buzbee said. “Our guys knew when to hold back and play a little more conservatively.”
Buzbee also said Bontempo, who shot his lowest round in competition Monday, will now get noticed by other teams.
“He was under radar before,” Buzbee said. “Now other teams are going to be watching.”
