Eagle Valley lacrosse turns tables on Telluride

GYPSUM — Eagle Valley boys lacrosse started the season on the right foot, pasting Telluride, 8-1, on Friday at the Gypsum Sports Complex.

Mike Ramunno led the way with four goals, while Jared Salaz had two. Sam Boomhower and Wyatt Alt also ripped the net against the Miners.

“We had good senior leadership,” first-year Devils head coach Bobby Ecker said. “We only had 10 days to get ready, and I’m really proud of our guys.”

Goalie Joe Sheldon had a shutout going into the fourth quarter.

A Big Step

Though the first game, this is big step for the Devils. Eagle Valley lost to the Miners, 9-3, last season down in Telluride. While home-field advantage certainly has a say in the outcome, the swing in results is noticeable.

As with any coach after the first game of the season, Ecker has a shopping list of things upon which to improve. Clearing the ball out of the defensive zone was an issue on Friday, as was composure. The Devils were a little over-amped, particularly in the first half. The former just takes some more game experience. The latter is true of just about every team’s opener, regardless of season.

The Devils get right back to business today with an 11 a.m. date against Montrose in Gypsum.
