PALISADE — Eagle Valley’s Gino Giovagnoli and Carly Volkmer ran quickly at Thursday’s Palisade Invitational.

You’ve heard that story before. Taking nothing away from the varsity cross-country teams — the Devils boys won and the girls were second — but the real drama was in the JV race.

The Palisade Invitational was also the Slope JV championship meet, and Eagle Valley’s de facto run-off for the final regional spots at next week’s meet in Delta.

Aiden Branch won the JV race and so he’s off to Delta along with Harry Trotter, Vladimir Carbajal and Matt Genelin.

For the ladies, Madison Baxter was tops in the JV race and is on the regional team, along with Shelby Essex.

In the varsity race, the boys beat Fruita by one point, while the girls were just behind Palisade.

At regionals, there will be four team berths, and coach Melinda Brandt said that the gents probably have to pick off Montrose or Palisade to advance to state. The ladies might have a tougher path with Palisade and Summit in their way, but that’s why they hold the race.

“We’re refining,” Brandt said. “We’re excited to come in as a bit of an underdog. We’re excited to fight for a spot and make our team known at the state level.”

Thursday’s Hosses were Carbajal and Katie Grewe.
