CRAIG, Colorado ” Any time a team loses a rivalry game, the hangover can linger for weeks. Not for the Eagle Valley soccer team.

The Devils (5-1) easily handled Moffat County, 4-1, on Saturday in Craig.

“It was good for the team to see that they are one of the best teams around,” Eagle Valley coach Jason Rittmiller said. “It’s just about time they started playing like it. They started making better passes, clearing the ball, making better moves.”

With Battle Mountain’s Marco Ordono nowhere to be found, Cesar Castillo found some open space. The Eagle Valley senior put the Devils ahead 1-0 when he drilled a shot from outside the box.

Moffat County came back to tie the score 1-1, but the stalemate didn’t last for long. Castillo pushed Eagle Valley to a 2-1 lead after he made a nifty move to beat the goalie 1-on-1. The two goals ups Castillo’s season total to 16.

Gonzalo Gomez scored a spectacular goal to make it 3-1 in Eagle Valley’s favor. Gomez headed in a rebound from his own shot for the goal.

The Devils’ Fidel Macias ” playing in his first game of the season ” scored Eagle Valley’s last goal.

“(The offense) was on and off,” Rittmiller said. “We were trying Fidel out there for the first time. He just needs to get in the rhythm of the team a little better. We had Dominic Gora up there, too, and he did really well.”

The Eagle Valley defense also did well on Saturday. Moffat County’s only goal came on a penalty kick. The return of Steve White ” who missed the Battle Mountain game “definitely helped.

“Steve is a big asset for us,” Rittmiller said. “He and Isreal (Gomez) work really well together.”

Eagle Valley hosts Palisade on Tuesday.
