Eagle Valley soccer blanks Palisade on Saturday

PALISADE — So let’s take a look at the 4A Western Slope soccer standings, shall we?

Steamboat Springs is 3-0 with nine points. Eagle Valley is 2-0 with six points and Battle Mountain is 2-1 with six points.

Yep, Eagle Valley is in the mix after a 5-0 thumping of Palisade on Saturday afternoon. This has the makings of one of those wacky years in the Slope.

The Devils’ Nikolaus Opel had his first varsity goal on Saturday and that was the only tally of the first half.

“We changed strategy at halftime,” Eagle Valley coach Bratzo Horruitiner said. “We made our in-balls more effective, and we were a little more physical.”

And the floodgates opened.

Aaron Ledezma scored twice. Theo Nanin also got his first varsity goal. And because he simply won’t be left out, Aldo Palacios found the back of the net.

The Devils are 3-2 overall and, more importantly, 2-0 in the league with a huge game at Battle Mountain on Thursday at 6 p.m.
