Eagle Valley soccer wins home opener Thursday
GYPSUM — And Eagle Valley soccer is in the win column.
After a dispiriting 5-1 loss at Coal Ridge on Tuesday to start the season, the Devils bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Grand Junction Central on Thursday afternoon at Hot Stuff Stadium in their home opener.
The key was getting off to a quick start.
“I think we realized where our mistakes were,” Devils coach Bratzo Horruitiner said. “At the beginning against Coal Ridge, we were cold, a little nervous. We had to get steaming from the start, get right at it.”
And that they did. Eagle Valley’s Aldo Palacios scored in the fifth minute on a long free kick. He lofted his shot to the top, left corner and the ball clipped the crossbar and went in for a 1-0 lead.
Noel Ruiz to Aaron Ledezma spelled for a another goal in the 12th, and the Devils were on their way. Eagle Valley’s Colin Rouaud got the shutout in goal.
Eagle Valley (1-1) opens 4A Slope play with Glenwood Springs on Saturday at 11 a.m., also at Hot Stuff.
Huskies spikers fall to Indians
Battle Mountain volleyball suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, falling at No. 7 Montrose, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21.
The host Indians made the state tournament last season, so it’s not exactly “back to the drawing board” for Battle Mountain.
“Montrose is just steady,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “They serve tough, and our serve-receive struggled. They exploited some of our inexperience. All in all, we held our own. We just couldn’t finish games, and their experience finishing games was key.”
There were still some bright spots for Battle Mountain (1-1). Emily Clinton led the Huskies on the attack. Haley Frischholtz was strong defensively and Battle Mountain got a lift in serving during the second game from Jessica Cuomo.
Battle Mountain’s next in action on Friday for its home opener against The Classical Academy.
