Eagle Valley sweeps at Delta in opener
DELTA – “I’m out of Smiths, Gambles and Mathesons, unfortunately. I did get another Minett,” Eagle Valley track and field coach Jeff Shroll joked after Saturday’s meet at Delta.Kelly and Kim (Smith), Chris, Brad and Alex (Gamble), Everet and Wes (Minett) and Sean (Matheson) have graduated, but the Devils keep churning them out. Eagle Valley track and field proved just that with a a pair of wins at Delta Saturday. The boys rolled with 109 points, well ahead of Delta’s 83.5, while the ladies squeaked past Glenwood Springs, 99.5-96.”I think all the coaches are pleased because of the weather we’ve been having,” Shroll said. “We don’t have all our steps down in our jumping events. I’m really pleased with where the kids are at.” Eagle Valley still has a Smith. Mike, no relation to Kelly or Kim, was a big reason. The senior was in on 36 points, winning the triple jump and the long jump, and taking third in the high jump.He also teamed up with Mike Medsker, Pavel Pavlov and Matt Barker in the 400-meter relay for gold. The Devils had an excellent day in the relay, especially considering they haven’t had much time to work on handoffs. Jamie Fahrmeyer, Andrew Hill, Griffin Turnipseed and Barker won the 3,200 in a time of 8 minute, 43 seconds. In the mile, Kyle Simonett, Ethan Smith, Turnipseed and Medsker sped to the top of the podium. Emily Kingston, Hattie Higgins, Sierra Picklay-Zamora and Ashley Rohweder too the girls’ 400.Simonett took first place in the open 400, while Rohweder won the 100. Fahrmeyer had a pair of silvers in the 800 and the 1,600. Colt Nelson was third in the 3,200.. On the girls’ side, Amy Thompson took second in the discus, while Bryonny Hiland was third in the 300 hurdles.Eagle Valley hits the road Saturday for its annual stop at Hotchkiss.Sports Editor Chris Freud can be reached at 748-2934 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
