GYPSUM — Well, that’s the way to do it in front of the home fans.

Devils track and field won both the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the Eagle Valley Invite on Saturday in Gypsum.

The boys nipped the Huskies, 124-118, while the ladies were comfortably ahead of Battle Mountain, 164-137. Vail Christian’s girls finished eighth with 26 points and were the top 2A performers on Saturday.

Eagle Valley’s girls relays were pretty solid. The Devils won everything but the 400 meters. That makes winners of Eagle Valley’s teams in the medley, the 800, the 1,600 and the 3,200. Carly Volkmer won the 400, while Taylor Hermosillo was tops in the 800. Sophomore Charise Crabbe sprinted to a 100 hurdles win. Battle Mountain’s Lilly McMurrain won the open 200 for the Huskies with the Calabreses (Izze and Sofia) in tow. Sofia Calabrese leapt the furthest in the high jump.

On The Boys’ Side

On the boys’ side, the Devils’ 800 and 1,600 relays were the best of the day, and Xavier Mendoza won the shot put. For Battle Mountain, Alexis Aguirre won the 3,200, Owen Riley took gold in the high jump and David Cass was the discus champion.

Not surprisingly, Vail Christian reigned supreme in the pole vault. Cooper Daniels won it for the boys, while Taylor Alexander was tops among the ladies.

Eagle Valley, Battle Mountain and Vail Christian are all at Coal Ridge on Friday, with the Devils and Huskies also heading to Mullen on Saturday.
