Eagle Valley wins Hotchkiss Invitational

PAONIA ” Strong defense and a hot offense equaled a dominant weekend for the Eagle Valley baseball team.

The Devils swept three games at the Hotchkiss Invitational by a combined score of 42-6 to win the tournament.

In the opener, Eagle Valley shut out Monte Vista, 11-0. T.J. Loera went the distance in the five-inning victory. Loera gave up one hit and struck out four.

Loera helped his cause at the plate with two hits and an RBI. Cooper Adams and Aaron Hakes both added a pair of hits. Adams also knocked in two runs. Junior Larry Cavanaugh went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored in the win.

The hot-hitting continued in Game 2 for the Devils. Eagle Valley blistered Hotchkiss in a 25-3 win.

Jack Barbella and Robert Padgett both had four hits in the game. Barbella knocked four runs and Padgett notched three RBI.

Barbella got the win on the mound with four strong innings of work.

The last game of the tournament was closer for Eagle Valley, but the results were the same. The Devils topped Bayfield, 7-3, to take the tournament crown.

Robert Padgett gave up one earned run in four innings for the win. He struck out six batters.

At the plate, Cody Coulter and Padgett each had two hits. Padgett’s weekend included a 8-for-9 performance at the dish.

Eagle Valley is back in action today at Glenwood Springs.
