The Eagle Valley boys and girls wrestling squads walked away from last weekend’s Les Mattocks Invitational in Denver with a lot to celebrate.
On the girls side, all five Devils advanced to finals, with Gabby Littlepage, Julia Borejszo, Nora Abbot and Lauryn Ward claiming victories and Luvlyn Ward earning a silver. Eagle Valley finished third out of 15 teams, just 7.5 points back from the winners, La Junta.
Littlepage pinned her way through the 110-pound bracket to earn the tournament’s outstanding wrestler award — a first for the Devils’ girls program. Lauryn Ward received a first-round bye before pinning three straight opponents to capture her second tournament title at 125 pounds. Borejszo was recently given Inside Colorado Wrestling’s ‘Wrestler of the Week’ award after winning seven-straight matches — including victories over the No. 3 ranked wrestlers in both 4A and 5A for Colorado and the No. 1 ranked wrestler from Wyoming — at the Tiara Challenge last week. On Saturday, the junior pinned La Junta’s Sarah Howell and Conifer’s Penny Dickinson to win at 135 pounds.
“They are looking dominant going into regionals,” assistant coach Bob Good stated regarding the girls team as a whole.
The Eagle Valley boys placed eighth out of 32 squads as Alamosa won the team title. Senior Cole Good led the way for the Devils, topping the 138-pound field with a 4-3 decision over Air Academy’s Michael Saba.

“He still needs to open up and force the scramble more, but I think he is in a good place headed to regionals,” head coach Travis Ward said of Good, who is ranked fifth in 4A.

Alex Good advanced to the 132-pound finals but fell to Denver South’s Robert Baca by a 6-5 decision. In the closing seconds, Good had Baca on his back for a two-count, but the referee called it off.
“We emphasize the importance of performance over results here,” Bob Good stated. “(Alex) was not completely healthy and was dragging, he pulled out the big move at the end and was not rewarded. There is nothing we can do to change that. Hopefully karma comes his way at the state tournament.”
Another bright spot for the Devils was Josiah Quinn. Bob Good said the freshman embodied the team’s “never say die” attitude throughout the tournament. In the third round of the consolation bracket, Quinn coupled a Peterson roll with a nearside cradle pin to defeat Skyview’s Matteo Jaramillo late. The comeback fueled the 120-pounder’s run to a consolation runner-up finish.
“Josiah is a very dangerous young wrestler,” Bob Good said. “All eyes on him for years to come.”
Eagle Valley will host a senior-night triangular on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against Rifle and Steamboat Springs. Bob Good said the match will take place on a brand new mat donated by Mile High Wrestling Club, which features former NCAA division I wrestlers and coaches in Max Wessell, Cam Croy and Steve Elicker.
“Eagle Valley wrestling is blessed (to have them) donate their time and knowledge to wrestlers across the Western Slope (who are) looking to improve and take their wrestling to the next level,” he stated before adding that the “bleachers are always packed” for senior night. “Come early and grab a good seat for the action.”
