MONTROSE – Eagle Valley High School will be well-represented this week, with nine of its wrestlers heading to the Colorado State meet at the Pepsi Center in Denver beginning Thursday.”We’re thrilled with that,” said Devils head coach Ron Beard. “We’ll be peaking for the state tournament. We’re very happy and very confident.” B.J. Jaramillo is one of the top qualifiers for the Devils. Weighing in at 103 pounds, he took first Saturday at the regional meet in Montrose. Chris Best, 145 pounds, also took first after a close match. Both will kick off state competition against the fourth seeds in their categories. “Chris had one real close match. B.J. pretty much mauled his way threw it and smoked the field,” Beard said. “We’re going to have some tough goes. Right away we’re going to hit the top kids in state. If we can beat them – and we have the wrestlers do it – then we’re on our way. B.J. is sitting pretty sweet. His first match is against a kid he beat pretty handily.”Jaramillo took second in state last year. The six others to qualify from Eagle Valley include 140-pound Mason Ewing and 275-pound Gabe Velaquez in second place, 189-pound Brian Saldana,171-pound Brendan Best, 160-pound Christ Harvey and 152-pound Kylan Kottestette all respectively in third place and Jimmy Benevides in fourth place. Battle Mountain sends two to stateMONTROSE – Battle Mountain also qualified two Huskies for state Saturday in the 4A conference. After shutting out two of his opponents Saturday and conquering all of them, 135-pound Rudy Frausto will enter the state tournament as the No. 1 seed. Also, after some tough matches and what his coach assessed to be unfair stalling calls from the refs, Daniel Trujillo, 130 pounds, placed fourth and will enter the first round of state against the No. 1 seed.”You never know what could happen in the state tournament,” said Huskies head coach Desi Quintana. ” I believe that we have two kids who could win the state championship if they wrestle to their best ability.”Staff Writer Shauna Farnell can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 610, or sfarnell@vaildaily.com.Vail Colorado
