Freestyle team shines in Steamboat

Special to the Daily Ski and Snowboard Club Vail's Matt Dillon grabs some big air at last weekend's competition at Steamboat Springs.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS – With the competition season in full swing The Ski and Snowboard Club Vail Freestyle team has been very busy lately.

Last weekend the junior aged (13 and older) mogul skiers as well as several members of the SSCV Freeride Team were in Steamboat Springs for the third stop of the season in the Rocky Mountain Freestyle tour. In Friday’s back-to-back halfpipe events, Eagle’s Brian Johnson took second place overall in both events, capping off his best showing so far this season. In Saturday’s Junior Mogul competition Heidi Kloser of Vail racked up another top-five finish ending up in fourth place overall and first place in the J3’s. Kelsey Teran of Boulder was right behind with her a great second run to move into fifth place overall and second place in the J1s.

On the men’s side, Matt Dillon of Wolcott continued his success this season with an eighth place overall finish and fifth in the J1s. Fourteen-year-old Matt White of Edwards skied to a 17th place overall finish and first place in the J3s. Complete results are available at Also this weekend, several of SSCV’s top freeride skiers competed in the Silver Young Guns competition at Copper Mountain. Post-grad Bobby Haupt twisted and spun his way to a second-place finish in one of the biggest freeride competitions in the state landing him several sponsorship offers.

The SSCV freeride team will be spending the next week preparing for the U.S Freeskiing Open which will be held right here in Vail from Jan 18-21. The SSCV mogul skiers continue the Rocky Mountain Freestyle Tour this weekend in Aspen Highlands with Open Mogul competition on Saturday and Dual Mogul competition on Sunday.Vail, Colorado
