Gallegos shines under the lights in Glenwood

“It was a night game. That was pretty exciting because a lot of us haven’t had a chance to play under the lights since the old college days,” Gallegos midfielder Michelle Dickson said. “Plus when the sun goes down, the temperature gets cooler. So any chance we get to play soccer in cooler weather is fine by us.”

Day or night. A hot afternoon or a cool evening. So far it hasn’t really mattered for Gallegos, which upped its record to 3-0 with a 3-2 win over Glenwood.

Fullback Jen Corie broke the seal on Gallegos’ first road win of the season with a steal outside of the top of the box. She dribbled around a Glenwood defender and shot. Her strike was right on the mark sailing over the keeper’s head and into the upper, left corner of the net for 1-0 lead.

Kari Kusske gave Gallegos a 2-0 lead going into intermission.

“The great thing about this particular goal is that it started in the backfield. We passed the ball on the ground all the way up the field and she took a one-touch shot outside of the box on the right. The thing was a rocket. It just flew past the keeper,” Dickson said. “Obviously, we’ve had some wins last weekend, but this is really the first game where we were able to gel as a team and kind of work together to move the ball to create our own opportunities.”

Glenwood halved Gallegos’ lead in the second half, but Kusske struck again for some much-needed insurance. The hosts scored with 10 minutes left, but the strong play of Caitlin Rapson and a good defensive effort from the entire team held off Glenwood.

“The last 10 minutes of the game were pretty intense because they were applying pressure to score,” Dickson said. “But we held them down. We had a lot of veteran players. There were a lot of familiar faces. It was a good chance to blend in with the new girls.”

Gallegos is next in action Sunday when the team hosts Glenwood at the Vail Athletic Field at 10 a.m. It’s part of a soccer doubleheader as Gallegos’ counterpart, the Pepi’s men’s soccer team, takes on the Denver Kickers at noon.
