Glenwood spikers take Battle Mountain in five
EDWARDS — Sister Sledge’s “We are Family,” rang out on Tuesday night at Battle Mountain, but it was Glenwood Springs volleyball that was dancing.
Even Demons’ coach Dennis Sunderland showed off some of his moves.
“Thank you,” he joked about his dancing skills after his team’s 26-24, 15-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-11 win over the Huskies.
“I was so pleased with them,” Sunderland said. “They did what they were supposed to do as a team. They finally came together and did what we talked about in practice and ran it like a team together. It was so fun to watch.”
And since the victors write history, it was fun for Glenwood, which leveled its league record at 2-2 (7-3 overall) going into a big game on Thursday at home against Palisade.
After the two teams traded serving errors — a theme for the evening — the Demons’ Mary Fuller and Cheyanne McLelland served the Demons out to an 8-3 lead in the fifth game. One of the big points of that run was a combination block from Kassidi Johnson and Ashley Emery.
A Johnson tip and a kill from Emery gave the Demons a seemingly comfortable 11-5 advantage, before the Huskies rallied. Avery Weaver served it up for the Huskies and Lillian Benway and Timaree Mckenny got Battle Mountain as close as 12-10 before Glenwood closed out the game.
“It really gives us a confidence boost and sets us up because we’ve got Palisade and Eagle Valley coming up,” Sunderland said of teams at the top of the 4A Slope. “We put ourselves in a place where we can control what we’re doing.”
Meanwhile, Battle Mountain (2-3, 2-4) continued to struggle to find the winning combination.
“Our game, when on, is fast and effective,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “Our serving is strong. When we slow down to our opponents’ speed or continuously make unforced errors, it’s tough for us to compete.”
Battle Mountain is off until Tuesday when it hosts Summit County, in what Fitzgerald termed “a must-win” match.
