Minus two first-round draft choices and three veterans, the Broncos’ Josh McDaniels conducted his first full-squad training camp practice this morning to begin his career as an NFL head coach.

“I grew up a son of a coach, so it’s exciting feeling to come out and run your first organized training-camp practice and just coach the players that were here, excited about what may lie ahead for us, and trying to get us better every single day,” McDaniels said.

The two-hour, full-pads session unfolded how McDaniels expected.

“It looked like the first day. Good effort. Good tempo,” he said. “(But) a lot of sloppy mistakes and a lot of things to correct and fix. Long way to go but it was good to get off to a start.”

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall was present and accounted for when the Broncos took the field at 8:45 a.m., but defensive players Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill and Marcus Thomas did not participate. That threesome was placed on the active physically-unable-to-perform list on Thursday.

Players had to pass a physical and a conditioning test Thursday in order to be able to practice today. Players on the active PUP list can be removed from it at any time.

Bailey had surgery on his elbow after last season, but participated in all the team’s minicamps this spring.

Also missing were the Broncos two first-round draft picks, Knowshon Moreno, a running back selected with the No. 12 overall pick, and outside linebacker Robert Ayers, the No. 18 choice. Neither has reached a contract agreement. The two rookies cannot be on the Dove Valley grounds until they reach an agreement.
