Gore Rangers earn singles wins

Daily Staff Report

A short day for VMS tennisBy Ian CroppDaily Sports WriterGRAND JUNCTION – Rain and forfeits left the Vail Mountain tennis team with little competition Saturday at the Western Slope Tournament in Grand Junction. Those who were able to hit the courts fed off the momentum of Friday’s matches.Lara Green won her single-set match, 6-3. Green grabbed an early lead and maintained a cushion for the rest of the match. At No. 3 singles, freshman Sarah Logan earned an impressive 6-3 win.”She moved the ball around nicely and let her opponent make the mistakes,” said coach Rob Honzo. “This was a really good weekend for her. She got a lot of match experience.”Stephanie Miletich lost a hard-fought match, 7-5.”She was trying some new things, like staying low in her shots and not going for power, but focusing more on control,” Honzo said.Rain delays moved most of the doubles matches indoors, but all of Vail Mountain’s opponents left the tournament early.”The frustrating thing for them is they were really anxious to play,” Honzo said. “They had such success and confidence the day before that they wanted to keep rolling.”Vail Mountain’s next match will be April 11 at Steamboat Springs.Sports Writer Ian Cropp can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 14631, or icropp@vaildaily.com.Vail, Colorado
